The game was shortened to 28 overs per side due to the start being delayed by nearly four hours due to severe rain. Given the overhead conditions, Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi was not hesitant to bowl when the weather finally cleared.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman was sidelined from the series, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz was unable to play for Afghanistan because of a Grade 2B quadriceps strain and a bony hip flexor issue. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe gave left-arm seamer Newman Nyamhuri and left-hand hitter Ben Curran their debuts.

Azmatullah Omarzai and Fazalhaq Farooqi both showed a great deal of mobility off the field and in the air, supporting Shahidi’s decision to field. Farooqi’s away movement in the first over beat Curran, who had a difficult beginning. His clip to deep fine leg got him off to a good start in international cricket, but batting would always be a challenge.

With a clean cover drive from Farooqi, Tadiwanashe Marumani started Zimbabwe’s boundary counter, but he was undone by an in-dipper from Omarzai who smashed his middle pole. Then, Omarzai took the opening ball from Brian Bennett, who had scored the most runs in the previous T20I series, while Mohammad Nabi held onto a good opportunity to his right at second slip.
After misreading a carrom ball from AM Ghazanfar, Dion Myers managed to get a few drives away but was stuck in front of the wickets. In the ninth over, Omarzai dismissed Curran as he attempted a dazzling drive but was caught by the wicketkeeper with a thick outside edge. Sean Williams was the next to leave after three balls. He got a thick edge to Ikram Alikhil after hanging his bat out to a ball of greater length from Omarzai.

When the rain started two balls into the ninth over, the game was ended because the floodlights had been turned on from the beginning. Omarzai made an impression even during his brief outburst, taking 4 for 18 from his four overs.
On December 19, the second ODI will take place at the same location.
