PTI SC Chairman Demands Advancement of Judicial Commission

On Sunday, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, the chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), declared that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiation committee was ready for a third round of talks with the government. But before proceeding, he underlined that there needed to be real progress on the opposition’s demand for a judicial commission to look into significant political events.

In the midst of the political blockade, discussions

In an attempt to manage the country’s increasing political tensions, negotiations between the PTI and the current coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) first began in late December 2024. Weeks of talks haven’t produced much, though, and important topics like the creation of a judicial panel and the release of PTI members from detention haven’t been settled.
Both parties accused one another of sabotaging the bargaining process on Saturday. Government officials accused the opposition of not taking the dialogue seriously, while the PTI chastised the government for reportedly postponing talks.

After visiting PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Adiala Jail, Sahibzada Hamid Raza addressed the media, stating that his party is committed to carrying on the conversation but cautioning that the government needs to show sincerity. Flanked by PTI leaders Omer Ayub and Asad Qaiser, he emphasised the need to get negotiations going quickly. The statement claims that Sadiq has given the PTI’s negotiating team additional time to raise issues during meetings. Although the administration and opposition bear the final responsibility for working towards a resolution, his efforts have been crucial in creating a dialogue-friendly atmosphere.

The Imprisonment of Imran Khan and Its Repercussions

Tensions between the government and the PTI increased after Imran Khan was imprisoned last year. His arrest exacerbated political differences and sparked large protests by PTI supporters after he was charged in several cases. Violent conflicts resulted from the state’s repression of many of these protests.
Tensions escalated during the PTI’s “Final Call” protest last month. The administration has refuted the party’s claims that a dozen of its members were slain during clashes with the police. As tensions rose, there were increased calls for a PTI ban, and the government established task groups to combat what it described as the party’s “malicious campaign.”

In response, Imran Khan adopted a more conciliatory tone. From behind bars, he formed a five-member committee tasked with engaging in talks with the government and other stakeholders. This shift, combined with PTI lawmakers adopting a softer stance in parliament, paved the way for the ongoing negotiation process.

Barriers to Crossing the Divide

Deep dislike still taints the government-PTI relationship, notwithstanding the start of negotiations. Each side has accused the other of undermining attempts to reach an agreement. The PTI contends that the government’s unwillingness to form a legal committee and its refusal to free its members are signs of bad faith. Government representatives, on the other hand, argue that the PTI’s record of violent protests and rhetoric calls into question the legitimacy of its demands.
According to political analyst Dr. Farhan Hussain, both parties’ willingness to make concessions is essential to the negotiations’ success. “The establishment of a commission of judges is an important request for PTI, but the government must also address broader issues, including political reforms and the rule of law,” he stated.

This is a critical opportunity to end the current impasse during the third round of negotiations. There is increasing pressure on both sides to put the interests of the country ahead of political points. The SIC chairman has emphasized the need for tangible progress while maintaining a guarded sense of optimism.
“We need a clear roadmap and immediate steps towards achieving our goals,” Raza said. “This is not just about PTI but about ensuring justice and accountability for the people of Pakistan.”
The decision at the next meeting will probably influence how Pakistan’s politics develop in the coming months. The country is currently keeping a careful eye on the situation in the hopes of finding a solution that will promote unity and stability in the face of growing difficulties.
