President Donald Trump said the United States would take over the war-torn Gaza Strip and develop it economically after resettling Palestinians elsewhere, a step that would cap decades of U.S. policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Trump unveiled his surprise plan at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday without providing details.

The announcement came after Trump on Tuesday proposed a move to permanently resettle more than two million Palestinians from Gaza in neighboring countries, calling the enclave—where the initial stages of a precarious ceasefire and hostage-release agreement between Israel and Hamas are underway.

Trump should anticipate fierce opposition from both allies and enemies to any U.S. occupation of Gaza, and his proposal raises questions about whether the Middle Eastern power Saudi Arabia would be willing to join a renewed U.S.-brokered push for a historic normalization of relations with U.S. ally Israel.

Direct US involvement in Gaza would go against Washington’s long-standing policy and the opposition of much of the international community, which believes that Gaza should be part of a future Palestinian state that includes the occupied West Bank.Trump told reporters that the United States will occupy the Gaza Strip and we will work with it.
